MARIE ANTOINETTE, Sofia's latest feature film, was shot on location in France and released in 2006. The film received an Oscar for Costume Design as well as was nominated for the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival. MARIE ANTOINETTE stars Jason Schwartman, Judy Davis and Kirsten Dunst.
Sofia's feature film, LOST IN TRANSLATION, took home numerous international film awards for screenplay, direction and performance. Most notably, Sofia received an Oscar nomination for Best Direction and Best Picture and won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. The film was shot on location in Japan and stars Scarlett Johansson, Giovanni Ribisi, and Bill Murray, released by Focus Features.
Sofia made her feature film debut as director and writer of THE VIRGIN SUICIDES, which was released by Paramount Classics in April 2000 to critical acclaim. The film, which stars James Woods, Kathleen Turner, Kirsten Dunst and Josh Harnett, was adapted from Jeffrey Eugenides' best-selling novel about a family of suburban teenage sisters and the boys who were incurably obsessed with them.
Prior to that, Coppola co-wrote and costume designed for the “Life with Zoe" segment of NEW YORK STORIES, directed by her father, Francis Ford Coppola. In 1989, Coppola designed the costumes for the cult classic THE SPIRIT OF ‘76, and appeared as Mary Corleone in THE GODFATHER III the following year. In 1994, Coppola and friend Zoe Cassavetes created the pop-culture magazine show, “Hi- Octane,” which aired on Comedy Central.
In addition to her accomplishments in feature film, Sofia has directed shorter format works including the new White Stripes video, featuring Kate Moss, for the track “I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself”. Her short film LICK THE STAR was also a popular segment on the Independent Film Channel in 1999.
A former student of Fine Art at Cal Arts, Coppola has also worked as a photographer and fashion designer. Her photos have been seen in Interview, Paris Vogue, Allure and Tokyo's Parco Gallery and her clothing line, Milkfed, can be found in domestic and international fashion boutiques.
